‘9:44-9:44’ by Ahmed Nader Gretly

9:44

A blue earth orbited the sun,

Like a marble suspended in space,

Carrying billions of souls along for the ride.

9:46

Two lovers held each other,

Whispering words of love and lust,

Making promises and sharing secrets without shame.

9:48

Warriors of truth huddled up,

Shielding themselves from the coming hail,

Reciting holy scripture for their mighty and immortal god.

10:00

She refused to be happy,

In fear that this happiness would fade,

Replaced by excoriating sorrow and infinite tears.

9:48

The warriors held on to their beliefs;

Their faith was strong and their hearts pure,

With mesmerizing visions of the garden of eden.

9:46

Underneath a moonless sky,

The man asked the woman to marry him;

She accepted and promised to love him ’till the end.

9:44

A marble ran on an elliptical path,

Spinning silently around a blazing lantern,

While the eyes of the universe stared in bewilderment.
